Green Logistics

I read in a other blog about green logistics and I think that this topic is quite interesting. In this times it’s rather necessary to help our environtment to stay heathy.

What is Green Logistics?

Logistics is the integrated management of all the activities required to move products through the supply chain. For a typical product this supply chain extends from a raw material source through the production and distribution system to the point of consumption and the associated reverse logistics. The logistical activities comprise freight transport, storage, inventory management, materials handling and all the related information processing.

The main objective of logistics is to co-ordinate these activities in a way that meets customer requirements at minimum cost. In the past this cost has been defined in purely monetary terms. As concern for the environment rises, companies must take more account of the external costs of logistics associated mainly with climate change, air pollution, noise, vibration and accidents. The picture below shows elements which should be take in account when thinking about green logistics.

This Video (unfortunately in German) shows a logistic center of  Tchibo which is working with a Green Logistic approach. Examples for their engagement are:

  • returnable transport packaging
  • optimization of transportation ways
  • compensation of electicity
  • recharging of the fork lift during braking

I found another very interesting video. This video shows ten steps to a “greener supply chain”.

The steps are:

  1. Establishment of the approach in the business case.
  2. Get Top-Level Buy in and Accountability
  3. Empower your employees
  4. Benchmark supply chain sustainability
  5. Develop a sustainability plan
  6. Identifying low haning fruits first
  7. Develop stustainability scorecards for supplier
  8. Help your supplier succeed
  9. Review your performance
  10. Be transparent and publicise your effords

These are only the Headlines.  The video shows it more in detail.

Another interesting video concerning the green logistics appraoch about a shipping terminal. The company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics has developed a shipping terminal called “castor green terminal” which is enormous sustainable. This terminal combines terminal, processing and distribution activities. That facilitates a optimised supply chain. It is located to minimize transportation emissions.

The Castor Green Terminal includes a terminal and vehicle processing centre, which will handle products such as automotive, agricultural, construction, and other rolling equipment and offers services for receiving and delivery, cargo handling, storage, loading and discharging in a sustainable environment.

I found a lot of other interesting videos but that would burst the frame of the post. Therefore here only the links to the vidoes.

By the way there is a blog on wordpress which is only on green logistics. There are not so many post inside but maybe it will grow.
